Chairman of Azerbaijani Delegation to Euronest PA sends letter to leaders of European structures

Chairman of Azerbaijani Delegation to Euronest PA Elkhan Suleymanov has sent a letter to the President of the European Parliament, European Commission, Foreign Ministers of EU Member States, Co-Presidents of the Euronest PA, All members of European Parliament and Euronest PA, Suleymanov’s office told APA.

The letter says:

“Despite several election violations, the international observation missions evaluated the presidential elections held on February 18th 2013 in the aggressor state Armenia as “democratic elections” in the light of democracy, human rights and rule of law. All this despite the fact that the country in question has been occupying the territory of Azerbaijan for almost 25 years, condones the daily violation of basic human rights of all citizens who are or should be resident in the occupied territories, and with its general behavior, denial of the crime of genocide in Khojaly, February 1992, and outright disregard for democratic values is in blatant breach of most of the principles and values of both the European Union and Council of Europe.”

Stating once more the fact that the UN Security Council, European Parliament, and Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe have adopted resolutions condemning the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia and demanding Armenia to unconditionally release the occupied Azerbaijani territories, Suleymanov asked you to answer the following questions:

1.   How do you approach the fact that Armenia, a member state of the Council of Europe and the Euronest PA keeps under occupation the territories of Azerbaijan, another member state of the Council of Europe, for about 25 years?

2.   How do you assess the re-election of Serzh Sargsyan, organizer and one of the active participants of the Khojaly genocide, when he has not put an end to the occupation mentioned above and has not taken any positive steps towards a peaceful settlement between the two countries during his post as a high-ranking state official and Prime Minister for more than 10 years, and the president of Armenia for the recent 5 years?

3.   How consider the attempts to put into operation the Khojaly airport in the occupied Azerbaijani territories during Sargsyan’s term as a president of Armenia, giving the fragile state of the South Caucasus?

4.   The aggressor state Armenia will chair the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe from July 2013. How do you assess the chairmanship of this state, in light of the above mentioned unbelievable problems, in the institution which defines, defends and controls European values such as democracy, human rights, and rule of laws?

5.   How are European values defended by the European Parliament when it condones and discusses with the leadership of a country which is in direct and blatant violation of the principles your House is bound by treaties to protect?

6.   How can negotiations on EU-Armenia Association Agreement continue and how can your House promote them when there is an ongoing illegal occupation practiced by Armenia of Azeri territories?

7.   Seeing that your House is charged with the mission to defend peace and democracy, how can the European Parliament defend its integrity when its election observation mission condoned the highly disputed result of the recent presidential elections in Armenia and legitimized the re-election of a person who is accused of mass murder, grave human rights violations and the utter disregard for democracy, rule of law and peace?

8.   What are your plans for avoiding double standards in the Parliament’s approach to the Eastern Partners, which can lead to the escalation of tensions when statements such as those made by your fellow MPs who took part in the Armenian mission can be interpreted as supportive of aggression against the territory of Azerbaijan?

9.   As the European Parliament’s repeated calls for the withdrawal of all Armenian troops from Azeri territories have gone ignored for so long, how do you justify, Mr. President, your tolerance and dialogue with a state that dismisses your institution in such a way?
