Mr. Elkhan Suleymanov, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Delegation to the EuroNest Parliamentary Assembly and Member of the Parliament of Azerbaijan, addressed a letter to Mr. Joe Biden, USA Vice-President and Mr. John Boehner, Speaker of House of Representatives. The copy of the address was sent to Mr. Ed Royce, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Ms. Dana Rohrabacher, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats, and Mr. Richard L. Morningstar, U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

In his address, Mr. Elkhan Suleymanov stated that he supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine and considers it unacceptable to change the internationally recognized borders of an independent state without their will. At the same time, the Member of Parliament attaches the attention to the fact that as he monitors the events unfolding around the Ukrainian crisis closely, he notes strong discrepancies in the behavior of the United States of America related to such illegal attacks against the territorial integrity and sovereignty of countries in the Eurasian area. He asks the reason why US Congress doesn’t analogically support the territorial integrity of Azebaijan against the background that the United States Congress as well as other U.S. leading figures, including President Barrack Obama have been vocal ad active in condemning the breach of international laws, and both the U.S.A. and the EU have adopted sanctions as well as other actions against Russia as well.

The address reads: “A law is a law and should never be interpreted differently for different countries. Azerbaijan has almost 1/5 of its territory under occupation for 24 years now by Armenian soldiers, who control and do as they please in Nagorno-Karabakh and 7 (seven) surrounding regions of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan has suffered under this occupation, with over one million refugees and internally displaced persons, and hundreds of thousands of others affected. There are several United Nations Resolutions which have not been vetoed and which have passed, as well as a number of texts from the U.S., OSCE, EU and Council of Europe, all supporting the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. Where are then the sanctions against Armenia?

Mr. Elkhan Suleymanov recalls that Nagorno-Karabakh is NOT a frozen conflict and that it deserves just as much attention as does the crisis in Ukraine. Stressing possible grave implications of the Armenian occupation for the future, the MP stated that 410 thousand people of Nakhchivan, 450 thousand people of 6 (six) regions, and almost 1 (one) million Azerbaijani people – totally 1.850.000 Azerbaijani citizens – live under difficult social and economic conditions, being deprived of all their rights, due to the Armenian aggression, blockade and occupation of Sarsang water reservoir, something continuing for over 20 years. Thus, he underlines that despite mass and gross violation of human rights of over 1.850.000 Azerbaijani citizens, the world community ignores the issue. The Member of Parliament stresses that he witnesses dangerous double standards by USA and EU against Azerbaijan in the context of the above-mentioned.

In the address, the MP asks what makes our country worth ignoring and what makes it less important than Ukraine, while Azerbaijan is a strong, tolerant and democratic nation. The Member of Parliament also demands that the US Congress to show the same support to Azerbaijan, through statements and events supporting Ukraine and its territorial integrity, to make effort to remove problematic Section 907, committing to their values, and to respect the resolutions adopted by US SC.

Finally, Mr. Elkhan Suleymanov calls on the US officials to end double standards, hypocrisy, and discrimination, to respect the principle of territorial integrity all over the world and the values the United Nations, and even the U.S.A are built upon, to give the same level of support to Azerbaijan as for Ukraine, to decide upon discussing the issue of occupation of Azerbaijani territories as well during the events at all levels where the issues on Ukraine are discussed, and to apply sanctions against aggressive Armenia.
